London. John Van Voorst. 1856. 3 vols. pp. xxxv, (i), 614; (iv), 702; (iv), 679. Illustrated with 550 wood engravings. 8vo. Full green morocco with gilt decoration, all edges gilt. Slight foxing to end papers. Third edition. With the bookplates of Gathortne Hardy and Harold John Tennant. A very hansome set. ODNB. Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, first Earl of Cranbrook (1814 - 1906), was a Conservative Grandee. MP for Leominster, then MP for Oxford. Hardy was Home Secretary 1885 - 1886 and set up the royal commission on sanitary laws which led to the major public health legislation of 1871–5. He was also Secretary of State for War & Secretary of State for India. Harold John Tennant 1865 - 1935) was also a politician, but a Liberal. He was Secretary for Scotland in 1916.
