Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, first Earl of Cranbrook (1814 - 1906), was a Conservative Grandee. MP for Leominster, then MP for Oxford. Hardy was Home Secretary 1885 - 1886 and set up the royal commission on sanitary laws which led to the major public health legislation of 1871–5. He was also Secretary of State for War & Secretary of State for India. Harold John Tennant 1865 - 1935) was also a politician, but a Liberal. He was Secretary for Scotland in 1916.
