ODNB. On the death of the younger Linnaeus in 1783 Smith bought Linnaeus's whole library, manuscripts, herbarium and natural history collection. The total cost including freight was £1088. In 1788 the first meeting of the Linnean Society was held in Smith's house in Great Marlbo=rough Street, he was elected the first President of the society.
