M'Diarmid was a newspaper editor. He,with William Ritchie, prepared the first number of The Scotsman newspaper in 1817. M'Diamid then moved to Dumfries where he became the editor of the Dumfries and Galloway Courier which he edited until his death in 1852.Sketches from Nature is reprinted from the Courier.
