With an Introduction by Rev. F.F. Ellinwood. London. George Redway. 1897. pp. x, 520. 8vo. Green cloth, burgandy calf spine label, slightly rubbed, spine faded. 2nd edition, original published Chicago 1894. With the bookplate of Dr. Alan Gauld (1932-2024), parapsychologist and historian of psychical research. Nevius was a American Protestant Missionary in China. In the book he notes that Christian teaching is the most effective method of exorcism, and documents its performance by Christians of all denominations, and even non-believing Chinese. He argues, and analyses contemporary scientific literature, that demons are real in spiritual form. The possessed, he says, frequently show knowledge of scripture, rhymes or languages which the possessee is ignorant of; or display supernatural abilities. Both, he says, are evidence of genuine spiritual demonic possession.Ellinwood was corresponding secretary for the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions.
