London. G. Bell & Sons Ltd. 1971. Archive consists of a 1st edition of Like a Mantle the Sea; Proof Copy marked in green ink; Carbon copy; the manuscript written in pencil; a folder of reviews including a letter from the Scottish Education Department (Stella Shepherd was a teacher on Papa Stour in the Shetlands, which is the subject of the book); and a letter from the publisher regarding VAT.The Betjeman Section contains 3 typed letters all from 43 Cloth Fair, London signed to Stella Shepherd from Betjeman, one dated 28th August 1969, another 17th June 1970, this letter has a hand written note 'It was great fun meeting Mr Shepherd here & crossing over (?????) Bartholomew to have coffee with him & my bookseller friend Dusty Miller'; the last letter is dated 27th August 1971. This latter letter praises Like a Mantle the Sea. There is a signed printed card of thanks on his appointment as Poet Laureate. Betjeman sent a copy of First and Last Loves, the paperback edition of 1969 with the 1970 letter. The book is inscribed 'To the Shepherds of Papa Stour with best wishes from John Betjeman 1970'. Also dated 1970 is the third edition of John Betjeman's Collected Poems Enlarged Edition with dust jacket.. This volume is inscribed 'To Mr & Mrs Shepherd of Papa Stour With best wishes from John Betjeman Shetland for ever! 1970'.
